Orkney Storytelling Festival

28 October 2016

I’m thrilled to have been asked to give the keynote for the Orkney Storytelling Festival 2016, on Friday 28 October. I’ll be weaving a tale about myths and marine energy…

Storytelling and Marine Energy, or ‘How Wave Energy got an Origin Myth’

This is about an origin myth–an origin myth for wave energy, with selkie and trow, but also with scientists and technology. It might seem strange to mix myth and marine energy, but stories are memorable, stories travel, and stories transmit ideas. They can change how we think, how we imagine, and how we see the future. As an academic researcher and storyteller, I both gather and write stories. In this talk I want to tell how an electric ‘Draukie’ (half selkie, half trow) came to be, and how storytelling is as much a part of the future, as of the past.

You can see more details on the Orkney Storytelling Festival website.
